Long Island- Nova Scotia

Long Island- Nova Scotia

Where is Long Island, Nova Scotia? Long Island is a short five minute ferry ride from Digby Neck, Nova Scotia.

Nancy and I had no idea about this island until having a conversation with our Nova Scotia host, Whale Cove Campground owner Tina Frost.

Shortly after being told about Long Island, Nancy and I decided to drive to the Nova Scotia Ferry.  We decided it was time to begin exploring Long Island.

Long Island is approximately ten miles long and it is located southwest of Digby Neck in  the Bay of Fundy.

The Nova Scotia Ferry was located approximately five minutes away from the Whale Cove Campground.  The close proximity made our campground stay even better!

Once we were at the ferry, we had to wait until thirty minutes past the hour to drive onto the ferry.  The wait proved to be a perfect amount of time to take some photographs of the area.

At thirty minutes past the hour, we drove onto the ferry.  This was a simple process, as two workers directed us exactly where to park our vehicle.  The fee was seven Canadian dollars, which included a free trip back, to Long Island.

After paying the worker the fee, we were able to exit our vehicle.  I took this opportunity to take some beautiful photographs.  A Long Island Boar’s Head Lighthouse photo and some pictures of the ferry itself.

Our trip to Long Island was a smooth and enjoyable ride.  The trip length to Long Island was approximately five minutes.

Once we were closer to land, everyone returned to their vehicles to prepare to disembark the ferry.  On Long Island, we decided to visit the Boar’s Head Lighthouse.  The Boar’s Head Lighthouse sits atop the northeast end of the island, where it marks the entry into the Petit Passage.

Nancy and I explored this area for approximately thirty minutes.  We were the only ones at the lighthouse, which made our exploring a wonderful experience.  The Boar’s Head Lighthouse was truly beautiful!!

On the northeast edge of the island where the Boar’s Head Lighthouse resides there were breathtaking cliffs above the Bay Of Fundy. This majestic lighthouse sits upon the landscape edge with an amazing scenic ocean view.

Due to time constraints, we had to return to the campground.  However, we did have an opportunity to explore Long Island for another two days.  During our short visit, we were already beginning to appreciate the quiet and tranquil island life!!

The Bay of Fundy is known for its whale watching and sea-bird tours.  Long Island offers whale and sea-bird tours throughout the summer months.  Another popular attraction on the island is Balancing Rock.  Balancing Rock is a large column that appears to be balancing on its end on the southern shore.

Nancy and I did take some time to exploring Balancing Rock.  Balancing Rock is located at approximately the midway point of the island.  There was a spacious parking lot area and plenty of signage,  which offered plenty of great information.  Two outhouses were also available as well.

We walked down a path for approximately 1.5 miles before descending approximately 236 steps down to the viewing area along the Bay Of Fundy.  We would classify the hike as a moderate hiking experience.

Once down at the viewing area, we were able to start enjoying the fruits of our hiking labors.  We were able to look out into the ocean as far as the eyes to see and we were lucky enough to see dolphins swimming in the bay.  Long Island also offers whale sightings off the coastline.

We also observed the Balancing Rock which was a pretty cool sight to see.  The Balancing Rock was indeed balancing on another flat rock.  An amazing display of nature’s beauty, which will one day be no more!

After spending some time enjoying the views, Nancy decided to start her return hike back to the vehicle before me.  Moments later, as I was getting ready to start my hike back, I observed an eagle flying in the sky.  The eagle  was heading in my direction and I was able to capture the moment with a photograph.

The photograph was a wonderful way to enjoy my eagle sighting for years to come!!  We would definitely recommend this hike to everyone who can physically and medically handle a moderate hike.  The views are great!!

We also took the time to explore a beautiful picnic/hiking area on Long Island.  While exploring the area, we were once again the only ones in the area.  If you are looking for a way to unwind and take a breath of fresh air, a visit to peaceful Long Island is calling you!

Long Island also has a great restaurant named The Captain’s Daughter.  To see our restaurant review, click the link below: The Captains Daughter Restaurant

We absolutely enjoyed our amazing Long Island, Nova Scotia experiences and we would highly recommend a visit to this island!  If you are in the Digby Neck, Nova Scotia area, go to Long Island and enjoy the nature, tranquility and amazing views that this island offers!!

Hey you were lucky enough to see my eagle friend!! When I am lobster fishing there by the balancing rock he follows our boat waiting for me to throw him red fish! He loves them! There is a nesting pair of them there about a 1/4 mike up the shore from the balancing rock. I have even been lucky enough to see babies in their nest!! Glad you had a good time in paradise! Come again!
