What are the reasons to visit Honeymoon Island State Park? This park is truly a Florida barrier paradise island, which boast over 900,000 visitors yearly. The park offers many outdoor recreational activities. Available at this beautiful 2,810-acre park include swimming, fishing, and nature study.
A Wonderful Nature Experience
Here, you can take a leisurely nature stroll along the Osprey trail to see an osprey’s nest or listen to the call of a great horned owl. This park offers two great nature trails that take you through the pine and mangrove forests. The trails are well known for ospreys and gopher tortoises, as this is their habitat.
A Relaxing Beach And Fishing Experience
The park also offers an opportunity to spend the day soaking up the sun on the approximately four miles of beach. You can kayak into St. Joseph Sound or enjoy some great fishing for snook in the Hurricane Pass. Please note, a Florida fishing license may be required.
Epic Hurricane Pass
The Hurricane Pass is located on the south end of the island. Here, Hurricane Pass was formed by a hurricane in 1921. As previously stated, this area is a great location for catching snook. Try your luck at catching some other species including trout, redfish, pompano, and shark.
History
In 1939, the island received its name when Clinton Washburn purchased this beautiful island. Here, together with LIFE magazine, a contest was held for newly married couples. The winners of this contest would enjoy a two-week “honeymoon” stay in thatched bungalows. Therefore, giving this island its name.
Park Location And Guidelines
Honeymoon Island State Park is located at 1 Causeway Boulevard, Dunedin, Florida 34698. The park is currently open 365 days a year between the hours of 8 a.m. and sunset. Here, an entrance fee is required. Your pets are only permitted in certain designated areas. In addition, all pets must be leashed less than 6 feet. Remember, your pets must be well-behaved at all times.
The park staff wishes you both a wonderful beach and swimming experience. However, you will find portions of the beach closed at different times of the year. Remember, you must always adhere to the posted signs.
