Getaway Planning Tips

  • CONSIDER PURCHASING PROPER FOOTWEAR – Along with purchasing a great pair of hiking boots, you may also want to consider buying a pair of water shoes. During your hiking getaways, you may not see too many people with water shoes. However, the water shoes could definitely be a valuable and worthwhile piece of equipment, so you can have a most enjoyable and safer experience. You will also have a piece of mind while enjoying your wonderful waterfall & swimming hole experience.
  • BEWARE OF PRIVATE PROPERTY – Here, you could run into an issue or simply do the right thing! If you come across a ‘Private Property’ sign do the right thing and leave the area. Simply find another beautiful waterfall to enjoy or another relaxing waterhole to swim at. You will find that some waterfalls and swimming holes reside on private property and we are very fortunate that these land owners allow us visitors to enjoy them. One way to ensure these beautiful locations remain open to the public is to do your part; carry in and carry out and thanks for doing your part so others may continue to enjoy beautiful and memorable experiences!

Best Time To Visit Tips

Wahconah Falls State Park, Dalton, Massachusetts
  • SPRING WATERFALL VISITS – You may find the best time to visit the waterfalls is now during the early Spring Season. During the annual snowmelt, which usually occurs from April to June, is the best time to visit. However, many waterfalls will look great for many days after a significant rainfall. Remember, the early bird gets the worm!
  • WHAT TO PACK FOR YOUR WATERFALL & SWIMMING HOLE ADVENTURES – When planning your waterfall getaway, you may consider bringing the following items: appropriate clothing items, bug spray, food/snacks, water/sports drinks, camera/smart-phone, guidebook/trail map (if none are available, be sure to take a picture of the Trail Head Signs!!), backpack/fanny pack, hiking footwear and/or water shoes, trash bags, sun tan lotion and a towel. *One important things for you to remember are some popular waterfall locations may not have internet access; so it would be in your best interest to have a Road Atlas on hand during your getaway. This will almost guarantee you reach your beautiful destinations!

A Water Fall And Swimming Hole Risk Tip

  • CLIFF JUMPING AND SWIMMING – Safety First! Lets make this clear, most waterfalls do not allow cliff jumping! Cliff jumping is seriously dangerous. Think long and hard about the risks before you partake in this activity. Many have been injured and died from this risky behavior. The following states have reported Waterfall/Swimming Hole fatalities: Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire. *Pets are also at risk! I would recommend that your pets are always on leashes at waterfalls and swimming holes. There have been pet fatalities reported in New England USA as well over the years. Safety First Tips

Bash Bish Falls State Park, Mount Washington, Massachusetts
  • USE CAUTION FIRST, SWIM SECOND – Be sure to never enter a swimming hole without first checking the area out! Remember safety first even if you observe someone else swimming in the area. Make sure you check the depth of the water, the power of the current, search for slippery rocks and any other safety concerns you may have.
  • SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE – Upon approaching a waterfall always use care and caution. Many people have been injured and/or killed in the beautiful majestic New England waterfalls. Don’t be a fatality statistic! Many people have attempted to get to close to the waterfall, slipping and falling in. Always be aware of your surroundings and keep a safe distance from the waterfall edge.
  • WEAR GOOD TRACTION FOOTWEAR WHILE VISITING WATERFALLS IN WINTER – Although visiting waterfalls during the Winter months can be definitely rewarding, there is certainly a higher risk of danger. You should use crampons, snowshoes or something with great traction to safely hike to the waterfalls. Water turns to Ice and it is slippery!

A Nature Tip

  • LEAVE NOTHING BEHIND – When hiking to waterfalls and swimming holes you may see some trash and/or some type of clothing left behind by someone. I am sure you would agree this is very sad! Please do your part to keep these areas clean and remember two wrongs do not make it right! If you are looking to make a lasting impression with some community service, how about pitching in and bring a trash bag along to make these areas beautiful again.
