It has been many years since I first visited the JFK Presidential Library and Museum in Dorchester, Massachusetts. I was still a teenager. After visiting, I will say that it left a lasting impression on me. So when James asked, “Hey, what would you like to do today?” I said, “Lets go!!”
Plan Your Amazing Visit
The John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum at Columbia Point is such an interesting place to visit. Here, you really get a feel for the time period and political tensions of what was happening. You will be impressed with the wealth of information shared about President John F. Kennedy’s life between 1917-1963.
“The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum is dedicated to preserving and providing access to the legacy of the 35th President of the United States. The Museum utilizes high definition, large-screen projections, interactive displays, re-mastered films and original artifacts from the life and times of JFK to bring to life President Kennedy’s 1000 days in office.” JFKLibrary.org Visitors have described the Museum as” “an unforgettable journey through American history and the life of a truly remarkable man.”
A Wonderful Initial Experience
When we arrived at the museum, which is located on Columbia Point, a bus load of people were just leaving. It was a beautiful September afternoon and we had about three hours to visit the museum before it closed. We felt that was plenty of time and our visit worked out perfectly.
First, we started by walking to the right of the building and down some stairs that lead you to a walkway around the front of the building. From here you have beautiful views of the Boston coastline and JFK’s boat (Victura). Here, the glass on the front of the building and the large display of our beautiful 45′ x 26′ American flag is honestly breathtaking!
Ticket Information and Getting To The Museum
Now it’s time to enter the John F Kennedy Library and Museum. Straight ahead is an information desk and to the right is where you purchase your admission tickets. The cost was $14 for an adult ticket, $10 for a youth 13-17 and $12 for Seniors and Students with college ID’s. The Museum is open from 9am-5pm daily excluding Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.
Would you like to visit using Public Transportation? The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum is nicely located by a subway T stop. Take the Red Line to the JFK/UMASS stop and follow the signs directing you to the ground level buses. Here, you can board the Route #2 shuttle, which departs approximately every 20 minutes and this will take you to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.
After purchasing our tickets, we started our tour by continuing to the right. Our first stop was an interesting introductory film that is about 20 minutes long and runs every 20 minutes. As you walk into the theater keep your eyes pealed for some highlights of “Young Jack.” Here, You will see photos and information about JFK’s early life.
A Plethora Of Great Historical Information
The introductory film highlights President John F Kennedy’s life before politics. It covers topics like childhood, education, military service in the Navy and his brief time as a journalist. The film is really cool and it was done with media from the era. We found the film to be very interesting.
After the short film James and I started to go through the exhibits. There is an amazing amount of information here. Did you know that there are over five million pages of archived personal, congressional and Presidential papers on file here? WOW!
In closing, you will have a great relaxing visit as you embark on a personal tour through the 1960s to appreciate the words, ideals and actions of our 35th President Of The United States. You will leave the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum with much appreciation and remember how President Kennedy inspired many Americans to ask what they could do for their country.
