Upon arriving, we walked through the port area and rented a car for some adventuring in Roatan Honduras. The great thing about Roatan is that they drive on the right side of the road as we do in the USA. After renting the car, as we were getting ready to get in and a tour guide came over and asked us if we need a guide.
This was our second time adventuring in Roatan Honduras. This time we were at a different port. So that means it’s still new, right??? Well it felt new to us. We spent time researching places we wanted to see and how we were going to see them.
Spotty Cell Service
We had our cell phones on us and there was a signal at the port area. Would we have a signal all across the island? There is our phones GPS if you have service. It looked like a relatively easy road system. After thinking about it for like one minute it just made sense to bring a guide. This would make the travel less stressful.
We decided to take Eldon Hil, from the Bay Islands Professional Tour Guides Association, with us. James and I were very happy that we did. Eldon disclosed to us that he had been living in Roatan since birth. As a result, he was able to help us see everything that we wanted to see during our short stop in Roatan.
The Bay Islands Professional Tour Guides Association work off tips. Eldon simply explained before we left that we could bless him with whatever we felt was a fair amount to tip him at the conclusion of our tour. No pressure, this is what Eldon does for a living to support his family.
I wanted to do two things in Roatan. First, was to hold a sloth, which we were able to do. Secondly, a snorkel on Tabyana Beach.
James of course knows that a “happy wife, means a happy life” so those things did get done. Eldon also had an island tour in mind and he took us to some great scenic spots for pictures. It was a win, win!
Discover Mayan Jungle Canopy
Let’s start with the sloths, monkeys and birds at Mayan Jungle Canopy. I’ve only seen sloths in pictures. They really do move slow!!! We each took turns snuggling with them.
Have you ever noticed how long there claws are. Super long, like 3-4 inches, and they hold on really tight. The sloth I was holding held my finger like a newborn would and snuggled right into my chest. Ahh, I wanted to bring him home.
Did you know that sloths have very course hair? I was expecting them to be more fluffy and soft but sadly, no. This was one of those bucket list moments and I am so happy I was able to experience this!!! Here, you can also zip-line but we chose not to and continued on our exciting island journey.
The monkeys were fun and feisty. They would climb down on your shoulders and eat out of your hand. When they are eating they don’t want to be patted. The monkeys will think that you are after there food and bite you. James and I didn’t run into that issue. Our monkey was familiar but not overly friendly. He wanted his food and was ready to go after that.
Lastly, we had a closeup encounter with the birds. Wow! These large, colorful, beautiful birds graced our shoulders and ate from our fingers. They were extremely gentle with us. It was a great adventure. We did see a few other animals as well.
Amazing Snorkeling
Infinity Bay is were we entered to get to Tabyana Beach. The Infinity Bay Resort gives you a wrist band to use there resort for a minimal fee. Here, we walked down the beach and stopped at the end and snorkeled there.
I found this beach to be one of my best shore line snorkel spots anywhere. The beach is shallow so the fish are close to you and the variety of fish as well as there color was magnificent. Again, I was so happy we were able to return!
Beautiful High Points
Eldon brought us to the highest points on the island. One spot was by the airport. It had a beautiful view of the bay. There are also shops for purchasing island art, water and/or local rum.
The second highest spot was El Faro Lighthouse. El Faro Lighthouse gave you quite the panoramic view. It was two U.S. dollars to climb up to the top and go out on the balcony to snap those great panoramic photos. What a beautiful sight to see! At this same location there was also a Rum factory and rum tasting room. Here, you could also sample yummy rum cakes and flavored rums.
A Fabulous Roatan Honduras Experience
Eldon guided us back to Mahogany Bay where we started. We felt very safe in his care. He talked nonstop about his home. What a knowledgeable guide to have with us on all our adventures. We truly enjoyed a full day, complete with beautiful vistas, great wild animals and amazing snorkeling. This tour guide adventure made our day in Roatan complete!
Next, James and I returned the car. Looked through the shops at the port and returned to our floating resort. I’d score todays adventure a 10 out of 10. If you are planning adventuring in Roatan Honduras, we highly recommend a guided tour with Eldon Hill and the Bay Islands Professional Tour Guides Association.
What do you think, does going to Roatan sound like fun to you?
