Sabego Lake – Maine

This past weekend, Nancy and I had the opportunity to take a road trip to the beautiful State of Maine.  We decided we would explore the tranquil Sabego Lake region and the Sabego Lake State Park area.

Sabego Lake is the home of wildlife, natives, and tourists.  Did you know:  Sabego Lake doubles as a beautiful recreation destination and an important water supply.

Nancy and I traveled from North Central Massachusetts to Sabego Lake, the approximate travel time was 2.5 hours.  We were glad we did!  While traveling to Maine, we were lucky enough to observe 4 beautiful hawks and a deer along the shoulder and median of Route 495.  A beautiful way to travel!!

Sabego Lake is Maine’s deepest and second-largest lake, which is just northeast of Portland.  Sabego Lake has a maximum depth of 316 feet, which makes this lake a very popular for lake trout fishing and much more!

While fishing, you will have an opportunity to catch brook trout, black crappie, large mouth and small mouth bass and white and yellow perch.  The fish range from 2 to 6 pound range, with possible catches in the 15 to 20 pound range as well.

While exploring around the lake, Nancy and I were immediately amazed by the waters clarity.  If you are planning to do some lake fishing, you will have to use live baits or more realistic baits due to the waters clarity as well.

Sabego Lake Spring Season

The early Spring Season is the most popular time to fish on the lake.  Salmon fishing is popular during this time, with possibility of catching a 2 to 5 pound range salmon.

After spending some time exploring around the lake, we decided to visit the Sabego Lake State Park, which is a 1,342 acres public recreation area.  The park offers year round trail activities including Hiking, Biking, ATV’s, Snowmobiling, Cross-country Skiing and Snowshoeing.

Perhaps you are looking for lake Water Activities such as boating, swimming, paddling and sailing.  The beautiful Sabego Lake region truly has so much to offer!!

Sabego Lake Camping

The park also offers Family Camping or groups of 6 people or less.  You can make reservations on 2/1/2019 at 9 am for Sabego Lake State Park Family Camping Sites, with online reservations available 24/7 or call Monday – Friday 9 am to 4 pm,    no holidays; Maine residents call 800-332-1501 and Non-residents call 207-624-9950.  For more information about the Maine State Parks and Camping Reservations please visit http://maine.gov

We found the Sabego Lake State Park to be a beautiful area to enjoy the beautiful Maine nature.  During our time at the park, we observed several great hiking trails and a spacious camping area along the beautiful lake coast.

We also had an opportunity to walk the great beach along the lake coast.  The Sabego Lake State Park is truly a beautiful place to spend some time with family, friends and nature!

After leaving the state park we decided to stop by a local Raymond, Maine convenience store, The Sunset Variety, to fill up our vehicle for the return trip home.  After filling up the vehicle, we decided to try out the famous steak and cheese sandwich, which was outstanding!!

The Frye Island Ferry

We then decided to take a short ride to the Frye Island Ferry, which is located at 7 Ferry Landing Road, Raymond, Maine.  Unfortunately the ferry station was closed and the ferry was no longer operating for the season, the ferry is closed November through April.

The ferry handles 9 cars and departs every 20-30 minutes, with no reservations required. Frye Island is only a ten minute ferry ride away.  We will definitely make a return trip to Frye Island in the future, for more information on the ferry click here.

What does Frye Island have to offer? Frye Island is a cash-only operation, which offers a nine-hole golf course, with many challenges for all levels of play.

The island also offer 15 quaint beaches with a 6-foot lighthouse, flower beds and mountain views, a town hall, a store, and a cafe, which reside in a single building.

However, Frye Island is vacant from November to April, with all the residents of the resort town being seasonal.  A great place to experience the island life!

Nathaniel Hawthorne – National Register of Historic Places

As we began our travels home, we came across a historic land mark, the author Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Boyhood Home, which is located at 40 Hawthorne Road, Raymond, Maine.

The house was built-in approximately 1812, with its interior now altered.  The house is now being used for functions for a community organization dedicated to the house preservation and the house is currently included on the National Register of Historic Places.

Beautiful Sabego Lake Region Nature

After this wonderful day of exploring around the Sabego Lake region, we decided to begin our travels home.  Shortly after heading home, we came across 2 beautiful deer on a Maine hillside along the side of the road.  Jim decided to take some pictures of the deer, when 2 deer turned into 5 deer.

What a treat to be able to enjoy the beautiful deer and Maine’s Natural beauty.  We spent about 15 minutes or so photographing and enjoying the beautiful deer.

The family friendly Sebago Lake Region is a great place to visit, we hope you enjoyed our super tips. We absolutely loved what this beautiful Maine region has to offer!
