When I was talking to a friend about our trip to Colorado, Utah, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada she started to get very excited. She was getting very excited for us!
She had also visited the same states and driven the same route. As she revisited her trip in her own mind, I enjoyed observing her excitement over the beautiful Canyonlands and the other places we were traveling to.
Her excitement made it that much more exciting for us and knowing how much she enjoyed her trip! When we were talking, she mentioned how much she enjoyed the Canyonlands National Park, which is located in Moab, Utah.
Discovering Canyonlands National Park
When we were navigating our way through Utah to get to Las Vegas, Nevada, we decided to stop in at Canyonlands and see exactly what she was talking about.
As we drove into Canyonlands National Park, we could begin to see why she was so excited!! We entered through the Island In The Sky area on route 313.
After looking at the park map, which was given to us as we entered the park, we knew there was going to be a lot of area to cover in one day. I can see why people plan two days or more for Canyonlands.
There are two entrances into Canyonlands and they are not connected. We drove on the paved road while we were in the park. Canyonlands does have a lot of 4 x 4 off-road trails and a few non-paved roads for two-wheel drive plus many of hiking trails.
During our time in Canyonlands, we stopped at the Green River Overlook, Grand View Point Overlook, Mesa Arch, Buck Canyon Overlook, and the White Rim Overlook.
Canyonlands National Park Weather
“Southeast Utah is part of the Colorado Plateau, a “high desert” region that experiences wide temperature fluctuations, sometimes over 40 degrees in a single day. The temperate—and most popular—seasons are spring (April through May) and fall (mid-September through October), when daytime highs average 60º to 80ºF (15º to 26ºC) and lows average 30º to 50ºF (-1º to 10ºC)” To checkout the current weather at Canyonlands National Park you can visit there website: https://www.nps.gov/cany/planyourvisit/weather.htm
Canyonlands temperatures often exceed 100ºF (37ºC), making strenuous exercise difficult and even dangerous! Late summer monsoon season can bring violent storm cells which can often cause flash floods. Remember common sense and safety first go a long way!!
The winters are cold, with highs averaging 30º to 50ºF, and lows averaging 0º to 20ºF. Although large snowfalls are uncommon even small amounts of snow or ice can make local trails and roads impassable, please remember to use caution.
There are so many things to see. From the desert, fossils, rivers and streams. To the animals, to plants and the most amazing night sky. We were truly amazed how much the Canyonlands had to offer!!
Canyonlands National Park Stargazing
“During the spring and fall, Island in the Sky rangers team up with rangers from Arches National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park to introduce visitors to the wonders of the night sky. A ranger program will be followed by stargazing and telescope viewing. The location will rotate among the three parks and the start time will vary with the time of sunset. Programs will take place in good weather or bad. Bring a chair or a blanket to sit on, a red flashlight (if you have one), and warm clothes.” https://www.nps.gov/cany/planyourvisit/stargazing.htm
