Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park

As we planned our trip to the Rocky National Park, I could see Jim getting excited, this was a trip that he waited a long time for.  Every year Jim would say where would you like to go on vacation?  Well, every year when we would start planning our vacation during the winter and all I could think of was warm weather climate areas.

So the options were the beach, an amusement park for the kids, or a cruise to the Caribbean.  I would just say in a few years when the kids get older or I think that the kids would enjoy this more.  We’ll get to Colorado, soon!

A Colorado Road Trip

Now we had a chance to travel alone, so the first trip was Colorado.  Jim finally was going to get the trip that he has waited so long for. The breathtaking views of the Rocky Mountains National Park!

We were staying in Bennett and I wanted to go to Estes Park to see the Stanley Hotel (more about that later).  So we started our journey through the Rocky Mountain National Park at Estes Park.

We were very fortunate that the road was open from Many Parks Curve west across the Rockies! Trail Ridge Road closes during the month of October and reopens when the road clears in mid May.

Old Fall River Road is already closed to motorized vehicles.  As of this blog post, Old Fall River Road will be closed until early July of 2019.  Pedestrians may still hike on the road until November 30th, along with their leashed pets.

Rocky Mountain National Park

The Rocky Mountain National Park has 5 campgrounds;  Aspenglen Campground, Glacier Basin Campground, and Moraine Park Campground can be reserved at http://Recreation.gov.

We chose to purchase the annual National Park pass for $80, since we knew we would stopping at several National Parks on this adventure.  A great deal for travelers!

The rate for a 1-day visit into the Rocky Mountain National Park is $35.  These passes may be less expensive if you decided to purchase them on the internet.  For more information visit their website@ http://nps.gov

Timber Creek Campground and Longs Peak Campground are first come first serve campgrounds.  The campgrounds that take reservations, need to be made well in advance.  These campgrounds that are first come first serve, you want to arrive very early to.  The weekends fill up very quickly!!

Rocky Mountain National Park History

The Rocky Mountains span 3,000 miles from British Columbia, in the western part of Canada, to New Mexico, in the southwest part of the United States.

The Rocky Mountains formed 55 million to 80 million years ago, Mountains started as plates underneath the North American Plate began to shift.  All the shifting is what caused the mountains.  Then at the last Ice age, there was more sculpting of the peaks and valleys.

“Public parks and forest lands protect much of the mountain range, and they are popular tourist destinations, especially for hiking, camping, mountaineering, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, skiing, and snowboarding.” (Wikipedia)

Amazing Scenery

Jim was in his glory during our ride through the Rocky Mountains National Park!  When we were more than half way done he would see a pull off and pull over, which there are many!!

He would pull over and say just one more, just one more.  Then we would drive a little further and another pull off would come into view with the amazing scenery and he would say again, one more, just one more and I would laugh!

Our trip to Colorado and The Rocky Mountain National Park was both breathtaking and amazing! We were absolutely amazed by the beauty.  Jim said, “My adventure through Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and Nevada was one of my top lifetime adventures!”

The Colorado beauty awaits everyones enjoyment! We wish you happy travels to beautiful Colorado and the Rocky Mountains National Park!!
