U.S. Homeland Security Tips

Safety First

Are you looking for some U.S. Homeland Security Tips, so your flying experience will be more enjoyable?!? Believe it or not, the moment you enter the airport a number of safety precautions are in place! These precautions ensure you reach your travel destinations safely. One of these safety precautions is making sure your luggage meets the Transportation Security Standards (TSA).

You must remember both planning ahead and packing properly are critical. This will ensure you have a quick and hassle free airport travel experience. So, you must always remember what you are allowed to pack in your carry on and checked bags!

So What Can I Bring on the Airplane?

The following 5 listed items are examples of things you can pack in your carry on and checked bags:

  • Aerosol Insecticides are not allowed in your carry-on. However, they are allowed in your checked bags as long as they are not labeled hazardous material.
  • Air Mattress with Built-in Pump.are allowed in both your carry-on and checked bags. It would be wise to check with your airline regarding any size or weight restrictions.
  • Airbrush Make-Up Machines are allowed both in your carry-on and checked bags.
  • Unopened Retail Packaged Alcoholic beverages are allowed in your checked bags. Alcohol purchased after going through security can be carried in your carry-on. However, alcoholic beverages over 140 proof will not be allowed in either a checked or carry-on bag.
  • Lighters, Plasma Lighters, Electronic Lighters, and E-Lighters are not permitted in either a checked or carry-on bag.

Remember, if you have any additional questions regarding any items, simply snap a photo or send a question to AskTSA on Facebook Messenger or Twitter. Your questions can be answered from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. EST weekdays; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST weekends/holidays.

You may also research your travel items on the TSA website @ http://tsa.gov

Extensive Explosive Testing

The TSA and their security partners have been testing liquids, aerosols and gels since August 10, 2006. These measures were put into place to ensure these items are in limited quantity and safe to bring aboard an airline. You want to make sure the bottles are in one clear plastic bag. So x-raying those items separately will allow security to quickly clear the items.

  • Remember the 3-1-1 rule fro carry-ons- 3.4 ounce (100ml) bottle or less (by volume); 1 clear plastic quart sized zip-top bag per passenger and 1 bag per passenger placed in the screening bin. If in doubt, place your liquids in your checked bags.
  • Always be prepared! Practicing 3-1-1 will ensure a smoother and easier security checkpoint experience. You will also do your part in keeping the security line moving.
  • Larger liquids must be declared! Breast milk, medications, baby formulas and food are allowed in reasonable quantities. Declare these items at the security checkpoint. Remember, officers may need to open these items to conduct additional screening.
