Anchorage, Alaska

The Amazing Northern Lights

The Northern Lights are from September thru April.

Anchorage’s bright starry nights are nature’s perfect backdrop for the swaying northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis.

Vibrant colors of greens, blues, pinks and yellows sway in the sky, marking the path of the dancing aurora borealis. The shimmering lights can be seen swaying in the starlit skies as early as 8 p.m., during the winter months. They also can be amazingly bright, multihued and fast moving, don’t blink!

Amazing Picturesque Views

When ionized gas particles hit the Earth’s magnetic field, it results in an amazing phenomenon of swirling curtains of light. These curtains of light glow, ripple and sway, fold and unfold and then suddenly disappear. The most common colors are brilliant yellow and green, but auroras can also produce red, blue and purples.

Fall, Winter and Spring are the peak seasons for viewing the northern lights. Also, the best displays tend to be accompanied by cloudless and moonless skies. The best hours for viewing auroras are often near midnight.

Of course, there is no guarantee when the aurora will be visible. Visitors who wish to view the northern lights should plan to spend a few days because the aurora is, like the weather, ever changing!

Oregon Coast

The Lovely Oregon Coast

From February to June, the gray whale migrates along the Oregon Coast. A few of the best locations to observe gray whales are the areas around Depoe Bay, Yaquina Head and Port Orford.

These areas are referred to as foraging hotspots, where pods cluster and feed on shrimp, a crustacean found in kelp beds near the ocean bottom.

In late Spring, the mother gray whale will swim with her calf around a half-mile off the coast. This makes for some great viewing opportunities!! The mothers are keeping there calfs close to shore to protect them.

This helps to keep them out of the path of the killer whales. If a killer whale tries to attack, the mother whale will leave the calf in the shallow water by the coast and bring the killer whale out to deeper water. What a beautiful sight to see. Nature at it’s best!!

Fort Myers, Florida
