Lucayan National Park and Gold Rock Beach

Beautiful Lacayan National Park

However, maybe you are looking for a National Park and Beach adventure. The Lucayan National Park may just be the place for you. The Park is open 365 days a year. Admission into the park is $5 cash per person with children under the age of twelve (12) admitted free of charge.

An easy hike around the Lucayan National Park

Here, the park is located 24 approximately 24 miles east of downtown Freeport, the second largest city in the Bahamas. This 40-acre park encompasses nearly every vegetation zone represented in The Bahama Islands.

A Red-winged Blackbird

You will enjoy the upland pine forests and hardwood coppices to mangrove estuaries and the coastal dunes as well as beaches. This habitat diversity make the Lucayan National Park one of the most prime bird watching spots on the island.

The park is located along the paved road and well marked Grand Bahama Highway. Your transportation may be arranged through tour companies and by taxi. Roundtrip rates may vary so be sure to check with the company or driver before leaving.

Alternatively, visitors may travel on their own by renting a car, jeep, or motor scooter. Motorists should always check fuel levels before heading to the park, as there are no gasoline stations along the way. The park does provide a restroom facility.

Ben’s Cave

Caves

Enjoy two sinkholes which open into large limestone caverns. Ben’s Cave and Burial Mound Cave are parts of a large underwater cave system with over 6 miles of tunnels chartered.

The stairs lead from the sinkhole lip to viewing platforms just above the water level. The cool, dark recesses of the cavern provide shelter and nursery sites for Buffy Flower Bats in the summer. You will also enjoy viewing the fish swimming in the water.

Mangrove Trails

The park also encompasses a portion of Gold Rock Creek which connects with the ocean several miles to the east. This tidal creek supports a productive mangrove ecosystem and from the boardwalks you can enjoy saltwater fish, wading birds and waterfowl may also be observed upon stilt-like roots.

Late Spring to early Summer, Epiphytic bromeliads and orchids begin blooming along the Mangrove Trails, however, bonsai-like Ming trees will delight you year round.

Gold Rock Beach

The walking trail to Gold Rock Beach

Between the mangrove estuary and beach shore lies one of the highest coastal dunes on the island. The area is richly vegetated with coco plum, sabal plum, cinnecord, sea grape and other tropical trees.

Wonderful Sea Grapes

On the windswept south side, you will enjoy a magnificent view of the beach with Gold Rock jutting out of the turquoise sea about a half mile off shore. This wide, sandy beach is excellent for just relaxing and cooling off. You will also enjoy snorkeling around the coral heads in the shallow waters for an interesting snorkeling experience.

Relaxing on Gold Rock Beach

For a more private and relaxing Gold Rock Beach experience, we recommend you visit the beach during the weekdays. You will marvel over the incredible beauty of this beach.
